A man raises his voice in a meeting, and he’s “passionate.”
A woman does the same, and she’s “emotional” and needs to “calm down.”
A man has a list of requirements for his ideal partner, and he “knows what he wants.”
A woman has standards, and she’s “too picky” and will “die alone with her cats.”
Same behavior. Completely different reactions.
Welcome to the world of gender double standards, where men are allowed to be human and women are expected to be perfect.
I’m not here to bash men or play the victim card.
I’m here to point out what we all see but don’t always name: the rules are different depending on what’s between your legs.
And it’s exhausting.
Here are seven things men get away with that women never could.
7 Things Men Get Away With That Women Never Could
1. Being Direct and Assertive in Professional Settings

When a man is direct in meetings, interrupts to make his point, challenges decisions, and pushes back on ideas, he’s a leader with executive presence.
When a woman does the same thing?
Ah, she’s aggressive. Difficult. Bossy. Bitchy.
She needs to “be more collaborative, and ”remember she’s part of a team.”
A man can walk into his boss’s office and demand a raise, and he’s advocating for himself.
Awesome! He’s confident and knows his worth. 👏🏾👏🏾🙄
A woman does the same, and she’s ungrateful and should be happy with what she has.
We’ve internalized this so much that even as women, we police each other and say things like,
“Maybe you came on too strong.”
“You should have been more diplomatic.”
Meanwhile, the men are interrupting everyone, demanding things, and getting promoted for it.
We really can do better.
2. Having High Standards for Partners
Men can have entire lists of requirements for women, and nobody bats an eye.
Height requirements, weight requirements, career expectations, appearance standards, and age preferences.
Everyone nods along like it’s perfectly reasonable.
But a woman says she wants a man who’s financially stable, emotionally available, over six feet, and has his life together?
“You’re too picky.”
“You need to be more realistic.”
“Your biological clock is ticking – you can’t afford to be this choosy.”
“You’re going to end up alone.”
So, we’re supposed to be grateful for any man who shows interest and makes it work regardless of compatibility.
Meanwhile, men get to shop for partners like they’re customizing a car, and nobody says a word.
Okay.
3. Losing Their Temper

Emotional outbursts are entirely normal.
Life can get overwhelming sometimes, and these expressions help us manage things.
It’s funny how a woman is labeled as unstable or hormonal when she shows anger.
I have witnessed several times where a woman’s anger is dismissed as an overreaction or emotional instability.
In fact, the first question that is asked is if she’s on her period when she shows anger.
In my opinion, that is totally unfair.
Men yell, slam doors, and have emotional outbursts without anyone questioning them.
It’s seen as passion or just having a bad day.
A man’s anger is taken seriously and seen as justified, while a woman’s anger is dismissed as an overreaction or emotional instability.
4. Being Selfish With Their Time and Energy
My pregnant friend mentioned how often people have told her she should stay home once her baby arrives.
Everyone suddenly had an opinion on what she should sacrifice.
She should make sure nothing is lacking at home, and how to be present when she is needed.
This is a first-time mom who has never had a child before.
In all of these, she was not told how to prioritize her own health, and so on.
Trying to make time for herself means she’s not putting her family first.
She is being irresponsible, neglectful, and selfish.
But a man is allowed to prioritize his hobbies, friends, and personal interests without any guilt.
He can spend the weekend doing whatever he wants, and nobody questions his commitment to his family.
He’s maintaining his identity; she’s being irresponsible.
5. Being Bad at Household Management

Nobody questions why a grown man doesn’t know how to feed or clean up after himself.
I mean, these are basic life skills everyone is supposed to have.
But nobody calls it a failure when a man is helpless at household chores.
In fact, a man who can’t cook gets sympathy and even free food from whoever cares enough.
A woman, however, is expected to know how to manage a household naturally.
Nobody cares to know the kind of upbringing she had or her kind of interests.
Makes you wonder, if these are “basic life skills,” why is only one gender expected to have them?
Are you seeing what I’m seeing?
6. Being Emotionally Unavailable
Have you noticed how patient people are when a man struggles with communication?
You’ll hear things like,
“Oh, he’s not good at expressing his feelings.”
“Maybe he needs time to open up.”
“He’s processing.”
“Give him space, he’ll come around.”
Bla bla bla.
Whereas women are expected to be naturally emotionally intelligent and nurturing.
7. Having Strong Opinions
Have you ever heard someone describe a man as “opinionated”?
I’m guessing not.
But you’ve definitely heard “opinionated woman” or “she’s very opinionated”, and it’s never a compliment.
That’s because men with strong opinions are just men.
Having opinions is expected.
But women with strong opinions?
Aha, that’s a whole personality trait that needs to be labeled and warned about.
“Argumentative.”
“Bitter feminist.”
“Not very submissive.”
These double standards aren’t just annoying; they’re limiting.
They force women to shrink, soften, qualify, apologize for taking up space and being human.
While men get to be loud, flawed, demanding, emotional, imperfect, and still be taken seriously.
We’re not asking for special treatment.
We’re asking for the same grace that men get automatically.
I have a daughter, and I don’t want these limiting expectations to cause her to shrink.
I hope we can all do better as a people and make the world safe for women to be all that God has created us to be.
